The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board(JAMB) has disclosed that any students that gain admission illegally into tertiary institutions in the country will not be able to go for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

THE WHISTLER reports that 88 tertiary institutions in Nigeria, including University of Abuja and University of Uyo, failed to comply with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) admission guideline in their 2022/2023 admission process.

This was contained in a report tagged, ‘Compiled assessment of institutions on compliance with the 2022/2023 admission guidelines’, published in the Board’s Weekly Bulletin.

The Board in the report scored institutions who complied fully with admission guidelines 10 points; those with partial compliance, five points, while those institutions who failed to comply were awarded zero points.

Under the section for the conduct of full admissions on the Central Admissions Processing System(CAPS), the data showed that 88 (52 per cent) out of the 182 institutions listed conducted admissions outside of the CAPS.

Speaking to THE WHISTLER on the issue, JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, stated that the students will not only participate in the youth service scheme but will also not benefit from the newly introduced Federal Government’s Student Loan.

“The sanction is that your students will not go for NYSC. Now that the Student Loan has come, you won’t enjoy it. It is only through CAPS that you know that you are a real student. That’s why you see institutions like University of Abuja, where some students have not gone for Youth Service for over four years.

“It is as bad as that. It is affecting the students more and that is why we have always told them not to accept any admission outside CAPS. If you do that, it is at your own risk. It is just like buying a stolen product,” he said.

He, however, stated that there are no institutions that can be classified as following the CAPS completely.

“We want to see how we can get to where no institution can give admission outside CAPS. You cannot find an institution that is completely not admitting outside CAPS. It is not possible,” he said.
