Avolta and DB Schenker Revolutionize Freight Transport with Biofuel Innovation

apexlifehub.com 2 days ago

Avolta, a Swiss-based travel retailer, and DB Schenker, a German logistics provider, have announced a groundbreaking collaboration to revolutionize freight transport with the use of biofuel. The two companies have entered into an agreement to transport goods using marine biofuel between Europe and the United States.

A Sustainable Solution for Greener Shipping
Avolta has disclosed that all containers moving on the Barcelona – Miami route will now be fueled by marine biofuel, resulting in lower emissions. The biofuel, known as used cooking oil methyl ester (UCOME), is derived from renewable and sustainable sources, particularly waste cooking oil. This move aims to offset the biofuel's upstream emissions and reduce environmental impact.

Commitment to Sustainability
Avolta's adoption of the Book & Claim System ensures full traceability and credibility in the use of sustainable marine biofuel. The company projects a significant decrease in CO2 emissions, potentially preventing over 150 tons of CO2 well-to-wake emissions per year. This transition marks a crucial step towards decarbonizing shipments and transforming route transportations.

Driving Towards Decarbonization
Camillo Rossotto, Chief Public Affairs & ESG Officer at Avolta, expressed the company's dedication to sustainability and emphasized the shift towards biofuel for ocean freight as a vital initiative in reducing logistic emissions. Similarly, Miguel Ángel de la Torre, director of maritime transport at DB Schenker in Iberia, highlighted their mission to support customers in sustainable transformation through biofuel adoption for low-emission transport.

In line with global environmental objectives, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry. DB Schenker's collaboration with Hapag-Lloyd to implement emission-reduced container transports further underscores the industry's commitment to sustainable practices.

The partnership between Avolta and DB Schenker signifies a significant leap towards greener and more sustainable freight transport, aligning with international efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental stewardship.
