Fisherman escapes arrest, drowns in L. Kyoga

A fisherman in Nakasongola District has drowned in L. Kyoga after he and his two other colleagues’ evaded arrest by officers attached to the Fisheries Protection Unit [FPU] during an operation to crackdown on illegal fishing.

The deceased has only been identified as Afan.

Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police spokesperson confirms the development.

He says that it’s alleged that the deceased along with two other fellows also only identified as Charles and Arafat went fishing from Ninga landing site in Kazwama Sub County.

Later the Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) attached to the Kibuye Detach mounted an operation to apprehend suspects involved in illegal fishing activities.

The team discovered three individuals Arafat, Charles, and Afan, illegally fishing while using boat number 95.

In a desperate attempt to evade arrest, the suspects jumped into the water and tried to swim away.

The FPU team managed to rescue Arafat and Charles, but tragically, Afan drowned and lost his life.
