Murder At TASUED: NANS Urges FG, States, Institutions To Redress Security On Campuses

LAGOS – Following the murder of a 400 level student of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State by yet to be identified assailants on Wednesday, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on states and the Federal governments and management of institutions need up security across campuses of tertiary institutions nationwide.
The victim, Fabiyi Hammed Ayinla, a 400-level student of History and Diplomatic Studies at TASUED was reportedly dragged out of the examination hall and taken to a nearby bush within the premises of the institution where he was murdered.
Addressing a press conference in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the Clerk of the Senate, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), National Secretariat, Senator Comrade Oladimeji Uthman drew urgent attention of government to the alarming insecurity situation on the campuses of tertiary institutions across the nation as exemplified by the daylight killing Fabiyi at TASUED, Ijebu Ode.
According to the Clerk of NANS Senate, the gruesome murder serves as a grim reminder of the grave threats posed by cultism and related criminal activities within the nation’s educational institutions.

He regretted that the dastardly incident occurred despite claims of internal security personnel on Campuses, saying such incidents points to the vulnerabilities of the current arrangements that require immediate redress.

He said, “It is disheartening that such heinous acts continue to endanger the lives of our students who are in pursuit of knowledge and personal growth. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.

“In the light of this tragic event, the Senate Secretariat that has just concluded an emergency meeting is calling on the federal and state governments and managements of both public and private owned institutions, to prioritise and enhance security measures and architecture on campuses.”

To keep campuses free of criminal tendencies and activities, NANS suggested among others; an increased surveillance and patrols, strengthening of security personnel, collaboration with law enforcement agencies, promotion of awareness and preventive measures and a beef up of crisis response protocols.

The Clerk of the Senate added, “The safety and well-being of all Nigerian students both at home and in Diaspora remain paramount to us as a leadership, and it is incumbent upon all stakeholders to take proactive measures to secure our campuses.

“NANS stands ready to collaborate with government authorities, security agencies, educational institutions, and relevant stakeholders towards achieving safer learning environments for our teeming members.

“We hereby request for prompt action in order to prevent future tragedies and restore confidence in the security architecture of our educational institutions across the nation,” NANS added.
