Newly-released footage appears to show Ukrainian troops dramatically liberating a key Black Sea outpost from Vladimir Putin's forces two years ago.

On Sunday Ukraine's security service (SBU) shared the previously unseen clip, which is said shows Ukrainian forces, including the SBU, carrying out "a unique and extremely important operation" on Snake Island back in June 2022.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced at the time that the Moscow's "Armed Forces completed their tasks on Snake Island and withdrew the garrison stationed there".

The clip shared on SBU's socials on Sunday appears to show explosions on the island, and Ukrainian troops approaching by air.

Bodycam footage then shows the troops landing and moving through buildings while firing off rounds, though no clear exchanges with Russian troops are shown.

The video hasn't been independently verified, and the Russian Defense Ministry is yet to comment.

The island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, had been targeted by Russia at the start of its invasion on February 24, 2022.

That day, Ukrainian troops on the island grabbed headlines after telling a Russian warship demanding their surrender to "f*** off."

The defiant phrase went viral online and sparked a surge of patriotism among Ukrainians, typifying their defiance in the face of Russia's aggresion.

Following Russia's withdrawal in 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff Andriy Yermak tweeted: "KABOOM! No Russian troops on the Snake Island anymore. Our Armed Forces did a great job.

"The enemy hurriedly evacuated the remains of the garrison with two-speed boats and probably left the island. Currently, Snake Island is consumed by fire. Explosions are bursting."

At the time, the Kremlin denied its troops were driven off the island by Ukrainian forces.

Russia's Defence Ministry said it had decided to withdraw from the outcrop as a "gesture of goodwill" so that a UN humanitarian corridor for the export of wheat could be opened.

The video comes as Russia continues to stretch out Ukrainian forces in several areas along the 1,000-kilometer (600-mile) front.

Moscow has stepped up airstrikes in a bid to drain Ukraine’s resources, often targeting energy facilities and other vital infrastructure.

The shelling of the front-line village of Niu-York in the Donetsk region also left five injured, said Gov. Vadym Filashkin. He said that Russian forces had shelled populated areas 13 times over the past 24 hours.

In Dnipro, at least one person died and 12 were injured, including a 7-month-old girl, after a Russian strike destroyed the top four floors of the apartment bloc Friday evening, regional head Serhii Lysak said.

Kyiv has also struck back at Russia with its own aerial attacks.
