TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Biden-Harris campaign opened multiple campaign offices in Florida including one in Hillsborough, and another in Pinellas County. But some have questions about that investment by the campaign, wondering whether Biden even has a chance to win Florida — especially after this week’s debate.

“This was 90 minutes of seeing this elder abuse by the Democratic Party,” State Committee Representative of the Republican Party Tom Gaitens said.

“Former President Donald Trump, who sat on that debate stage for 90 minutes and just told a lie after a lie,” said Fentrice Driskell, Democratic leader of the Florida House of Representative.

Despite the performances during the presidential debate, Democrats are confident Biden remains their choice to defeat Trump in November in Florida. Republicans think Biden is unfit for office.

“What I saw was a president who was focused on policy issues, but he had a lot of information to try and get out,” Driskell said. “And, you know, could he have performed stronger? Yes, sure. But who amongst us should be judged on a single miss?”

The idea of Florida’s reputation of being a battleground state is fading away as Republicans hold a big advantage in the number of registered voters. The Biden campaign decided to open 11 field offices in Florida, including in the Tampa Bay area.

“It’s great to open these offices,” Driskell said. “It’s driving energy on the ground. But even more than that, it’s like the Biden campaign is kind of planting its flag and saying, you know, these are the places from which we will build community.”

But Republicans said they believe opening the office sends a sign of panic.

“We want them to spend money here in the state, open up as many offices as you can because every dollar that the Democrats spend in Florida is a dollar they can’t spend in North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Georgia,” Gaitens said.
