An Underrated Supervillain Brought a DC Icon Back from the Dead
The following contains major spoilers for Poison Ivy #24, on sale now from DC Comics.
Poison Ivy has officially returned to the land of the living, and it is all thanks to one of DC Comics' oldest and strangest supervillains.
Poison Ivy #24 finds Harley Quinn and the rest of Pamela Isley's closest allies mourning the latter's loss within the murky landscape of Slaughter Swamp. Rather than leave Poison Ivy's body where it lies, however, Solomon Grundy takes it upon himself to carry her into the depths of the surrounding waters. As strange as this might seem on the surface, Grundy knows full well what power Slaughter Swamp holds, just as he knows that it is Poison Ivy's best shot at coming into full bloom once again.
Batman's decades of cultivating his reputation as one of the most capable heroes in the DC Universe might just get him killed.
Cyrus Gold, better known as Solomon Grundy, is one of DC's classic Golden Age villains, with his original introduction taking place all the way back in 1944's All-American Comics #61 in Alfred Bester and Paul Reinman's story, "Green Lantern: Fighters Never Quit." In his life, Gold was a wealthy albeit potentially corrupt businessman. After being murdered and dumped in Slaughter Swamp, Gold was reanimated in the form of a super strong, effectively immortal being composed more so of the swamp's rotting flora than anything else. Gold was rechristened Solomon Grundy after he was heart repeating "born on a Monday," the second line from the nursery rhyme the character is named after.
Although his first battle was against Alan Scott, better known as the Green Lantern of the Golden Age, Grundy has gone up against a plethora of other DC superheroes in the decades since. Apart from his individual exploits, Grundy has also teamed up with his fellow DC supervillains as a member of various incarnations of the Injustice Society. Surprisingly, Grundy has also shown a propensity for heroics from time to time, although these instances have rarely lasted very long.
One of the most powerful heroes in the entire DC Universe has just been lost to the deadliest creation of Batman's entire career.
In recent months, Poison Ivy's life has been swept up in the ongoing fight against the twisted Doctor Jason Woodrue, aka the Floronic Man. After the Floronic Man developed a strain of parasitic fungi, the villain prepared to unleash his creation across Gotham City, and from there the entire globe. In a desperate bid to defeat the Floronic Man and stave off the threat he gave rise to, Poison Ivy made the tragic decision to sacrifice herself, marking a decidedly dour conclusion to a darkly fantastical storyline.
