Addressing Healthcare Disparities for Black Long Islanders: Urgent Calls for Action

apexlifehub.com 2 days ago

People of color in New York state are facing significant challenges when it comes to accessing quality healthcare. From disparities in health outcomes to higher mortality rates, the urgency of this crisis cannot be overstated. Disproportionate Health Outcomes Black Americans are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with diseases like diabetes and hypertension, leading to higher rates of mortality. These disparities are not just statistics but real-life consequences that urgently need to be addressed. Black Long Islanders, in particular, have the lowest life expectancy on Long Island due to decades of systemic racism and environmental injustices. Advocating for Change As an Assembly member and the chair of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic & Asian Legislative Caucus, I am tirelessly advocating for communities of color in Nassau County impacted by these inequalities. The recent fiscal year 2025 budget includes historic investments in healthcare, such as $800 million to support safety-net hospitals and eliminating copays for insulin. Challenges in Accessing Care Black residents often face challenges in accessing care, from transportation issues to lack of vital information. These obstacles lead to missed appointments and inadequate maternal healthcare, creating significant barriers to good health. The Fight for Affordable Healthcare Policies like the Affordable Care Act and the Inflation Reduction Act have been crucial in expanding access to affordable healthcare for millions of New Yorkers. Efforts to repeal these laws could have devastating consequences for thousands of Long Islanders, forcing them to choose between basic necessities and healthcare. A Call to Action It is essential to continue advocating for affordable and accessible healthcare for all New Yorkers, especially marginalized communities that have long been neglected. Addressing healthcare disparities and improving outcomes requires bold decisions at both the state and federal levels. We must prioritize the well-being of all our constituents and work towards a healthcare system that benefits everyone.
