Eight arraigned for unlawful assembly, breach of peace in Ekiti

The Ekiti State Police Command on Tuesday has dragged eight persons before an Ekiti State Magistrate Court, Ado Ekiti District for unlawful assembly and breach of peace.

The defendants are Adejuyigbe Babafemi (24), Yahaya Umaru (30), Idris Olaniyi (28), Olaniyi Olaoluwa (21), Isiaka Abdulmalik (20), Makanjuola Dare (45), Sunday Ogunleye (29) and Daniel Oluwaseun (29).

Police prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court on Tuesday that the defendants committed the offences on June 28, at about 9.30p.m at Okuta Gbokuta Lori Hill, Post Office, Okeyinmi, Isato Oke areas in Ado-Ekiti.

He said that the defendants “did conspire among themselves to commit unlawful assembly in the bush in such a manner likely to cause the breach of peace in the neighbourhood to fear, disturbed and provoke the peace of the areas.

“The defendants committed the offence which is punishable under sections 442, 57(2)(4) and 181(d) Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria 2021,” he said.

Counsel to the defendants, Opeyemi Esan, urged the court to grant bail to his clients, saying they would provide credible sureties and would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Olanrewaju Owoleso, granted bail of N100,000 each with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till August 1 for hearing.
