COVINGTON, Tenn. - A Memphis man who was already on federal probation for eight counts of attempted murder was rearrested after a crime spree in Covington.

Covington Police (CPD) said it all started just after midnight on July 1 when a woman's car was stolen from a Motel 6 on Highway 51. Hours later, just before 5 a.m., the Bradford Pharmacy on Highway 51 was broken into, according to CPD. Officers said that the stolen car was used in the pharmacy break-in.

Detectives eventually identified the suspect at 40-year-old Troy Stephens. CPD carried out a search warrant at Stephen's Memphis home on July 3 and police said they found the clothes and shoes worn during the pharmacy burglary. The stolen car used in the crime was found later that day, according to police.

CPD said that Stephens came in to the station and was interviewed by detectives on July 5. He denied committing the crimes, but changed his story several times, police said. He was arrested and charged with burglary, vandalism and theft of a motor vehicle.

CPD said that detectives are seeking revocation of his federal probation on those eight attempted murder convictions.

Anyone with information about the stolen car and the pharmacy burglary is urged to call the CPD Criminal Investigations Division at 901-475-1261. Tips can also be sent through Facebook Messenger to the Covington Police Department or submitted on the City of Covington website.
