Scientists at the Fudan University in China have unveiled a revolutionary emotional humanoid robot named “Guanghua No. 1.”

The robot has the unique ability to display facial expressions.

The robot which was unveiled last Friday at the 2024 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, China, stands at 165 cm tall and weighs 62 kg.

In addition to its advanced hierarchical generative brain model which allows it to move fluidly and maintain an upright posture, the novel robot has no fewer than 45 intelligent joints for smooth movement and an upright stance.

It was created especially to meet the needs of China’s aging population.

Gan Zhongxue, Deputy Dean of the Academy for Engineering & Technology at Fudan University, said market research revealed that the primary application area for humanoid robots is elderly care.

He said: ‘The robot’s facial screen can express happiness, anger, sadness, and joy.

‘‘The goal is to develop a health companion that can provide senior citizens with individualized, compassionate care. The goal behind developing the robot was to support elderly people’s emotional health.’
