The Ministry of Mobility released the 2023 traffic accident statistics on Thursday, revealing a decrease in fatal incidents on Luxembourg's roads compared to previous years.

The report, compiled in collaboration with the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC), the police, and the Technical Investigation Administration, indicates that 26 people lost their lives in road accidents last year. This represents a 31% decrease compared to the previous year and a 41% reduction in fatal accidents over the last decade.

Conversely, the number of people seriously injured in road accidents increased by 35% year-on-year.

Speed remains the most frequent cause of accidents, contributing to 22% of serious injuries and 42% of fatal accidents. Other hazardous driving behaviours, such as failing to follow road rules to the detriment of pedestrians, rank as the third leading cause of serious and fatal accidents.

In 2023, there were eight fatal accidents and 39 serious injury accidents involving alcohol. While the total number of fatal accidents declined slightly, it is noteworthy that in half of the fatal accidents (excluding those involving motorcyclists, cyclists, or pedestrians), the driver was under the influence of a legal or illegal substance exceeding the legal limit.
