Kwame Governs Agbodza, the member of parliament for the Adaklu constituency in the Volta region has sounded the alarm following violent protests in Kenya sparked by new tax laws.

These demonstrations, which saw protesters storming the Kenyan parliament, have ignited a continent-wide debate on legislative accountability and public trust.

Speaking passionately in parliament, the Ghanaian MP cautioned his colleagues about the potential for similar unrest in Ghana if lawmakers do not reconsider their approach to legislation.

"Kenyan public are beating up Members of Parliament for passing bad laws. Mr. Speaker, it is a serious matter. I saw colleagues and Members of Parliament beaten to a pulp and I saw my colleague running on TV …so Mr. Speaker this is an opportunity to advise us on how to pass good laws to avoid being beaten by the public. We should be worried.

“In fact, when I saw him running and the police ushering him through a tunnel to escape it was not a laughing matter. It is not a joke,” he said.
