CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — Three people in Charleston are temporarily displaced after a fire started in their home Thursday night.

Around 9:50 p.m., Charleston firefighters were dispatched to 1323 Adams Ave. for reports of a structure fire. When they arrived, they saw the two-story home with smoke and fire coming from the back of the house.

The Fire Department said crews made an aggressive attack, extinguishing the fire quickly. They said the fire appeared to have started in a first-floor bedroom, before it spread to the outside of the home up to the second floor. Crews were on the scene for about two hours, leaving around midnight.

No one was inside the house at the time and no injuries were reported, but the three residents will be temporarily displaced due to smoke and water damage throughout the home.

The Mattoon Fire Department, Charleston Police Department, Coles-Moultrie County 911 and Ameren CIPS all assisted.

The Charleston Fire Department is continuing to investigate but clarified they don’t believe the fire was caused by fireworks despite it happening on the Fourth of July.
