cbr.com 2024/10/5

A new sneak peek at NCIS: Origins comes in the form of an image shared from the set. It provides an early look at how Kyle Schmid will appear as the younger version of Mike Franks.

In the original NCIS series, the Mike Franks character was played by Muse Watson. Franks returns in a big way as one of the main characters of NCIS: Origins, an upcoming prequel series that also stars Austin Stowell as the younger version of Mark Harmon's Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Per Screen Rant, NCIS: Origins star Mariel Molino, who will play an original character in the series, posted an image on her Instagram Stories from the prequel show's set. It provides a good look at Schmid as Franks, and Stowell can also be seen in the photo along with fellow Origins actor Caleb Martin Foote, who's playing another new character.

Molino is playing Special Agent Lala Dominguez, a former Marine who will have a special bond with Gibbs that's "filled with sparks and turns that will keep the audience guessing," according to a statement about her casting. Foote will play Special Agent Benjamin "Randy" Randolf. The show will also feature Mark Harmon reprising his role as the older Gibbs, but in voice only, as he's serving as the narrator. Harmon is also executive producing alongside his son, Sean Harmon, who played a younger Gibbs in flashback scenes in the original NCIS.

NCIS: Origins Starts in 1991

The prequel series picks up in 1991, following Gibbs as he starts his career as a "newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks." There will be a blend of new characters along with younger versions of others who were first seen in NCIS.

Why Did Mark Harmon Leave NCIS?

Despite being NCIS's biggest star, Mark Harmon left and stopped portraying Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the show's 19th season.

“We are elated and honored to continue the expansion of the NCIS universe in such a unique and unexpected way,” CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach said in a statement when the prequel series was officially announed in January. “Viewers can look forward to Mark Harmon returning to CBS to narrate the complex and mysterious backstory of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early years in NCIS: Origins, which will build on the rich legacy of this character while reintroducing fan-favorite characters and meeting new ones.”

NCIS: Origins will debut on CBS in the fall, set to premiere on Sept. 1, 2024.
