‘He glides past people’: Darren Bent admits Chelsea player is way faster than he thought

Darren Bent has admitted that there’s a player in the Chelsea squad who’s faster than he thought.

Chelsea have been working with a very young group this campaign that’s filled with pace and energy. In fact, 39-year-old Thiago Silva is the only outfield player in Mauricio Pochettino’s current squad aged over 30.

It’s already confirmed the experienced Silva is leaving Stamford Bridge this summer when his contract expires to lower the average age even further. The Evening Standard says Chelsea think they have two current players to help succeed him as a leader, though.

The Blues do have lots of speed running through their team, especially in forward areas. The likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Raheem, Sterling and Nicolas Jackson often hurt opponents with their turn of pace.

However, it’s actually a Blues teammate that has caught the attention of a talkSPORT pundit for his sprinting.

Darren Bent shocked by Chelsea star’s pace

While delivering a rave review, Darren Bent said that Chelsea’s Cole Palmer has a great turn of pace to go with all the other excellent parts of his game.

“For Cole Palmer to go to Chelsea and do this and impact the way he has done, he looks incredible,” Bent told talkSPORT.

“He’s quicker than I thought as well because when he picks up the ball and pops it off for a little one-two, my goodness, when he puts his foot down he glides past people.

“I think he’s at the perfect club…”

Cole Palmer has a quicker brain than most

Palmer’s got the high football IQ that means he’s often a step ahead of his opponents already, which is a lethal weapon when you combine that with technique and incredible maturity for a 22-year-old.

He’s certainly no slouch and does have decent acceleration off the mark. The Chelsea Chronicle’s preference is when he plays in a central No 10 position and dictates games.

With Noni Madueke impressing for the Blues in recent weeks as a right-winger, Palmer slots perfectly into a central playmaker role. Madueke looks the part with three goals and two assists in his last six league games.
