Tom Petty’s Music Hits No. 1 On The Charts–But He Doesn’t

Forbes 2024/10/5

Since his death in 2017, Tom Petty has remained a favorite among not just his fans, but the rock world in general as well as countless musicians. The singer-songwriter was a legend in his own time and a respected figure, so it makes sense that after his passing, many would want to honor his work and pay their respects.

On the Billboard charts this week, a new tribute album of Petty’s music debuts. Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty arrives on five different rankings, bringing many of his hit songs back to the tallies…though the original creator of the tracks isn’t actually credited, so these wins don’t count toward his official discography.

Petty Country debuts at No. 1 on the Compilation Albums chart this week. It’s the only ranking where the title hits the top spot, and the project is the only new arrival on that roster this time around.

The same set also manages to launch inside the top 10 on one other Billboard chart. Petty Country debuts at No. 7 on the Top Album Sales ranking, which looks only at the bestselling titles in the U.S. In its first tracking frame of availability, the compilation sold just under 10,600 copies, according to Luminate.

Petty Country starts inside the top 20 on another two charts in America this week. It’s new at No. 15 on the Vinyl Albums list, where it was also a bestseller. The compilation manages to open at No. 18 on the Top Country Albums roster, as the set largely features contributions from some of the biggest names in the country field.

The Petty tribute launches lowest on the Billboard 200, though that’s to be expected, as it’s the most competitive of all the album rankings in the U.S. Petty Country begins its time on the all-consumption roster at No. 84. According to Luminate, it shifted a little more than 12,100 equivalent units as it arrives, with most of those being sales.

Petty Country features 20 of the late rocker’s most easily recognizable songs, covered by superstars of today. The title includes reworkings of tracks by musicians such as Dolly Parton, Luke Combs, Chris Stapleton, and George Strait, among others.
