Malaysia's transport minister Anthony Loke has announced an update to the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system, streamlining renewals and deregistration for Singapore car owners driving into Malaysia.

Effective from June 28, 2024, these enhancements include online renewals, automatic cancellations, and timely reminders, ensuring a seamless experience ahead of the VEP's Malaysia-Singapore border implementation on October 1, 2024.

Benefits of the new online system

  1. Convenience and efficiency: The ability to renew or deregister VEPs online offers unparalleled convenience. Vehicle owners can now complete the process from the comfort of their homes or offices, eliminating the need for physical visits and long waiting times.

  2. Faster response times: According to Minister Loke, the online system ensures faster response times for queries and applications. This is a critical improvement for those who need quick processing to avoid penalties or disruptions to their travel plans.

  3. User-friendly interface: The online platform has been designed to be user-friendly, catering to both tech-savvy individuals and those less familiar with digital tools. Step-by-step guides and FAQs are available to assist users through the process.

  4. Enhanced data security: With robust security measures in place, the online system protects user data, ensuring that personal and vehicle information is secure from unauthorized access.

Loke stated that following the VEP enforcement announcement, a total of 23,649 applications were received between May 28 and June 29, 2024. This number surpasses the 15,424 applications for the entirety of 2023. During this period, 6,120 VEP tags were issued to applicants, and 1,080 tags were activated.

The online system includes a dedicated support section to handle any queries or issues that users may encounter. Minister Loke emphasised that customer feedback is crucial for continuous improvement, encouraging users to share their experiences and suggestions.

The digitisation of the VEP renewal and deregistration processes marks a significant step forward in Malaysia's commitment to leveraging technology for improved public services. This move not only enhances convenience for foreign vehicle owners, but also aligns with the Government's broader goals of efficiency and digital transformation in public administration.
