I snuck into Glastonbury’s secret VIP pub – it was so pretentious even the celebs looked bored

234radio.com 2 days ago

Glastonbury is almost as famous for its hidden watering holes as its secret sets.

Tucked away behind the glaring eyes of ordinary punters are areas only a coveted black wristband will get you. In these private areas the rich and famous stand around necking pints away from prying eyes. But even within these already exclusive areas on Worthy Farm there are even more exclusive areas – tucked away inconspicuously behind corners and with only blink-and-you’ll-miss-it slits for entrances, they’re incredibly easy to miss and incredibly hard to get into.

But to my sheer surprise this weekend, we managed to sneak into one of these areas – disguising myself in a small crowd of people who flashed their illusive black wristbands to security while I slipped inside unnoticed (I tried this move again the next day and was instantly turned away).

So what exactly awaits behind this secret opening in a fence? An atmospherically kitted out pub named Moonbow where pints will cost you almost £7.00 looks like a real ale-drinker’s boozer, think leather Chesterfield-style armchairs, sturdy wooden benches and velvet stools. The place even has its own chandelier and is dotted with big wooden barrels, truly offering a “ye olde pub” vibe.

But, seeing as it was sunny, no one was actually sitting inside the pub, instead opting to stand around picnic tables on a small patch of grass next to the bar. To our left was Sophie Habboo, while on the right Jack Whitehall and Matt Smith stood with a larger group of people looking a tad bored. It’s hard not to wonder what the point of all this secrecy is.

It’s no surprise these hidden areas are slightly boring, given all the real fun is happening metres away in the main areas where festival goers are having the time of their lives, not tucked away in snooty, wristband-only areas that seem at total odds with the cultural melting-pot ethos Glastonbury claims to be all about.

And of course Moonbow isn’t the only secret boozer on site. There’s also the likes of The Hideaway (a bar by Soho House), Maceos (technically a crew bar -and you need to secure an exclusive wrist band to get in) and The Unfairground Bar (found in the South East Corner is the Unfairground, it’s a massive immersive art space with pyrotechnics and secret sets).
