A RARE penny could be worth up to £600 if it features a strange error, a coin collector has said.

The rare coin enthusiast shared a video on social media to explain how the coin could earn you a hefty sum.

The clip from the expert, who goes by the name of coincollectingwizard on TikTok, revealed images of rarely spotted change that could bag you hundreds of pounds.

The coin in question is a One Penny which dates back to 1893, but it's the production error which makes it a valuable find.

He said: “You need to check this one for a very strange error that makes the coin valuable, known as the 1893 over two Penny.

The video shows the ancient coin which features Rev Britannia, a character believed to represent the spirit of the British nation, seated holding a branch and scepter and a shield by her side.

On the sides of the coin it reads One Penny and at the bottom it is dated 1983.

The reverse of the coin is the usual Queen Victoria bun head, which is a feature on many coins from this era.

The Coin Collecting Wizard explained what makes the coin valuable is an error with the number three in the date at the bottom of the coin.

He said: “What you need to [do is] pay close attention to is the number three.”

“Under the number three it looks like there is the start of a number two.”

“The best way to notice this is where the three joins up in the middle. If it doesn't look like they join up neatly then you have found it.”

How missing number could make your 20p more valuable

The coin wizard told users this is a tricky error to notice but worth have a scan because uncirculated versions of this coin have sold for hundreds of pounds.

“This is such a difficult error to spot but it is well worth your time as uncirculated versions of this coin have sold for £600,” he said.

“So just remember you are looking for an old English penny from 1893. But that's only the first part. The next bit you need to look for is that three over two error.”

The video was shared on Monday and has so far been viewed over 8,000 times.

Just last month, the social media user shared how a video on how an old bun head penny coin could be worth over £160 if you own one with a specific date.

The collector explained that the 1894 predecimal penny "easily sells" for over £160 if it's in "extrafine condition".

The coin depicts Queen Victoria facing left on one side and the Helmed Britannia seated facing right on the reverse.

The content creator said the date on the coin is key as that's what makes the coin more valuable.

"The 1894 penny in extrafine condition easily sells for over £160, so keep an eye out for this very old penny,” he told fans.

There are a number of old coins that are worth money so it is worth keeping an eye on websites such as eBay if any in your pocket are valuable.
