It is understood he had been digging the hole for days and was attempting to locate a sewage system.

Aerial footage of the scene captured by 7News showed the man sitting in the corner of the giant pitt covered in a blanket to stay warm while specialist personnel worked on getting him to safety.

One of his legs is believed to have been trapped under dirt for some time. Firefighters were forced to brace the hole with planks to stop the ground from caving in.

However, he was successfully extracted and able to walk himself to a stretcher before being taken to hospital, the West Australian reported.

“By 6pm crews were working to suck sand from inside the hole to make the extrication easier before the man was wheeled out on a stretcher and into an ambulance,” the publication said.

The state’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services acting district officer Scott Bulloch said the mission to rescue the man was complex.

"Things are really dangerous when it comes to trenches, any movement around it and within the area can cause the sand to make him become more trapped … it's quite delicate," he said.

“It was a precarious situation, and we showed what WA Fire and Rescue can do.

“The staff worked amazingly well in conjunction with other agencies.“

The man is reportedly in a stable condition with non life-threatening injuries.
