Britain's most dangerous killer will die in a locked glass box underneath a Yorkshire prison - even though some say he should be released.

Robert Maudsley is one of the many terrifying inmates locked up in our county at HMP Wakefield, dubbed Monster Mansion. But Maudsley is different to many of the prisoners held there. Evil Maudsley us locked inside a specially-built underground cell at the prison for 23 hours a day.

He has been in solitary confinement inside the glass box since 1983 after he killed three people in prison.

Maudsley was first put behind bars for garrotting John Farrell in London. The murder took place in 1974 after Farrell picked up then-sex worker Maudsley and showed him images of children he had sexually abused. Maudsley handed himself into police and was found unfit to stand trial. He was taken to Broadmoor hospital where he and another sex offender tortured a convicted child molester to death.

He was then sent to Wakefield Prison but made it clear he wanted to return to Broadmoor. It was while at Wakefield Prison he killed two inmates in one day, despite originally setting out to kill seven. In 1983, he was deemed too dangerous for a normal cell and given solitary confinement.

Maudsley is escorted by at least four prison officers when outside his cell. In 2000, he unsuccessfully pleaded for the terms of his confinement to be relaxed, or to be allowed to take his own life. During his time in solitary confinement, he has also asked for a pet bird but his requests have been denied.

In letters more than 20 years ago, Maudsley wrote: "The prison authorities see me as a problem, and their solution has been to put me in solitary confinement and throw away the key, to bury me alive in a concrete coffin. It does not matter to them whether I am mad or bad. They do not know the answer and they do not care just so long as I am kept out of sight and out of mine.

"I am left to stagnate, vegetate and to regress; left to confront my solitary head-on with people who have eyes but don't see and who have ears but don't hear, who have mouths but don't speak. My life in solitary is one long period of unbroken depression."

Despite many calling for Maudsley to be kept in the glass box until his death, a prison psychiatrist has claimed he should be freed. Earlier this year, Dr Bob Johnson said Maudsley should be given a job so he can pay the families of his victims compensation instead of being locked up.

The Daily Mail reported that Dr Johnson told true crime YouTuber Shaun Attwood: "Robert Maudsley is a very cultured man...he's a very intelligent man. One of the things I say about Maudsley is, 'You have murdered somebody, you must pay.' But I would employ Maudsley with a very high salary, because he's got a good brain, and he should pay £10,000 a year to each family he has deprived a member of.

"Not lock him up at the costing the state £500k a year, it's ludicrous..."

Dr Johnson said he first met Maudsley in HMP Parkhurst in 1991 when he was in the hospital wing. He said: "At that time, he was probably the most dangerous prisoner in the prison system..." Dr Johnson said he was given permission to interview and treat Maudsley with therapy and that he was making "sterling progress."

He said: "The prison cell was 10ft by 6ft. I sat on the end of the bed by the door and he's at that end...We were unpacking his appalling childhood...These psychopaths, so-called, had all been born lovable, sociable and non-violent and something, which they couldn't tell you, had gone wrong, and eventually they could tell you."

Maudsley's brother had previously told how the murderer is "happy" behind bars and will never apologise for his crimes because "they were all paedophiles."
