With a countrywide increase in crime, residents need to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings. This could prevent you from becoming the victim of a crime. The George Community Police Forum recently sent out some safety tips.

GEORGE NEWS - In an era where our streets buzz with the glow of smartphones and the beat of music in Bluetooth headphones, staying safe has never been more critical.

For centuries, pedestrians have been exposed to a multitude of dangers when walking to and from their destinations; whether in rural or urban areas.

Today however, with the proliferation of valuable mobile devices such as smartphones, smartwatches and airpods, not to mention jewellery, the snatch-and-grab modus operandi presents almost unlimited opportunities for any criminal.

Here are 10 safety tips from the George CPF to avoid being a target:

• Be aware of your surroundings: Stay alert and keep an eye on your surroundings. If you sense someone following you, cross the street and walk near other pedestrians or into a shop until you feel safe.

• Avoid distractions: It's tempting to listen to music or chat on the phone while walking, but wearing earphones or using airpods makes you an easy target. Keep your ears free and your attention focused.

• Ignore verbal harassment: If someone tries to engage you verbally, especially if they seem intoxicated or unstable, keep walking. Seek help from nearby shops or people.

• Minimise visible valuables: Flashy jewellery, expensive watches, and the latest gadgets are attractive to thieves. Keep them out of sight to avoid drawing unnecessary attention.

• Safety in numbers: Walk in groups whenever possible. If alone, stay close to other pedestrians to appear less vulnerable.

• Choose well-lit routes: When walking at night, stick to well-lit and populated areas.

• Trust your instincts: If a situation feels off, trust your gut. Change your route or seek help immediately if you feel unsafe.

• Do not chase: If you're robbed, never attempt to pursue the thief. Look for help from those around you and contact the authorities immediately.

• Stay informed: Know the areas you visit. Understand which places are safe and which are not.
