Delta State residents demand action following highway robbery

A brazen attack by suspected kidnappers and armed robbers along the Warri-Sapele highway in Delta State has sparked outrage and fear among residents, prompting calls for heightened security measures.

The incident, which occurred between 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm on Friday, saw the assailants setting up roadblocks to intercept and rob travelers.

Reports indicate that the criminals, armed with sophisticated weapons, targeted motorists and pedestrians, indiscriminately seizing cash and valuables.

Tragically, the violence escalated when one individual, attempting to escape the chaos, was fatally shot. Despite immediate medical attention, the victim succumbed to injuries upon arrival at a nearby hospital.

Several others sustained injuries and were rushed to Oghara Teaching Hospital for treatment.

In response to the alarming situation, residents of Delta State have expressed grave concern over the security lapses that allowed such a brazen attack to occur.

Many are calling on local authorities to urgently address the issue of insecurity along major highways, emphasizing the need for enhanced police presence and vigilance.

Confirming the incident, Delta State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, assured the public, stating, “We are aware of the incident, and our officers responded promptly. The perpetrators fled the scene, but we are actively pursuing leads to apprehend them.”

The incident has reignited discussions about community safety and the imperative for collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and local communities to combat criminal activities effectively.

As investigations into the attack continue, residents remain on edge, hopeful that swift action will be taken to prevent future occurrences and restore peace along the Warri-Sapele highway.
