Former RBI Governor shares life lessons on discipline and success

The nostalgic breeze was palpable as Dr Duvvuri Subbarao, former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), returned to Rau's IAS Study Circle, the institution where he began his rigorous preparation for the UPSC exam many decades ago. The visit was more than just a walk down memory lane; it was a journey back to the foundational years that shaped his illustrious career.

Dr Subbarao's interaction with the students was filled with a wealth of wisdom, drawn from his diverse experiences.

He began by sharing his journey from Sainik School to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). These institutions, he explained, were not merely academic establishments but the crucibles that forged his character and determination.

One of the most memorable pieces of advice he offered was deceptively simple: "Make your bed." Dr. Subbarao elaborated on this habit, which he had cultivated during his years at Sainik School. "It may seem like a small and boring task," he said, "but making your bed every morning is a step towards bringing order to your life.

Every day, we face countless challenges, and the day can be exhausting. But the one thing you can control, the one thing that remains perfect as you left it, is your bed. After a tiring day, returning to a well-made bed provides comfort and a sense of accomplishment."

He connected this habit to the lives of students, emphasising the importance of maintaining health and balance. "In student life, it's easy to hide behind the excuse of being busy. But taking care of yourself is crucial.

It's these small, disciplined habits that build resilience and help you navigate the bigger challenges."

As Dr. Subbarao shared these insights, the students listened intently, absorbing the lessons from a man who had walked the path they aspire to tread.

He recounted numerous stories from his time at Sainik School and IIT, each with its own moral and lesson.

These anecdotes were not just personal reminiscences but profound lessons on discipline, perseverance, and the pursuit of excellence.
One story that particularly resonated with the students was about his preparation for the UPSC exam.

He spoke of the countless hours spent poring over books, the sacrifices made, and the unwavering focus required to achieve his goals.

He emphasised that success is not a matter of luck but the result of relentless effort and a disciplined approach.

Dr. Subbarao also reflected on his tenure as the Governor of the RBI. He spoke candidly about the challenges he faced, the decisions he had to make, and the responsibility that came with the position. He stressed the importance of integrity and ethical conduct, drawing parallels between his role at the RBI and the responsibilities that future civil servants would shoulder.

Throughout his talk, he made reference to his book, "Just a Mercenary?" The book, he explained, is not just an account of his career but a reflection on the values and principles that guided him.

It is a warm, engaging, and earnest narrative of an extraordinary career, offering insights and inspiration to young professionals striving to find their way and discover meaning in their journeys.

As the session drew to a close, Dr. Subbarao left the students with a powerful message: "Life is a journey filled with challenges and opportunities. Embrace the challenges, learn from them, and never lose sight of your values. It's these values that will guide you and define who you are."

The students rose to give him a standing ovation, inspired and moved by the wisdom and humility of a man who had achieved so much yet remained deeply connected to his roots.

Dr. Subbarao's visit to Rau's IAS Study Circle was not just a trip down memory lane; it was a profound reminder of the values and principles that can guide us through life's journey, no matter how challenging it may be.
