10 Highest-Mileage Pickup Trucks In History

hotcars.com 2024/10/6
HIGH-MILEAGE-TRUCK

Pickup trucks have been relevant since 1902. The first-ever pickup truck was built in Pontiac, Michigan by Rapid Motors and had a payload capacity of one ton. Then in 1922, Ford modified the Model T to have a short bed in the back. Fast-forward to the early 2000s, the Ford F-150 became the highest-selling vehicle in the American market.

Pickup trucks are so sought after in the American market, that it's prompted companies that you would never have thought to build a pickup truck, like Hyundai and Honda, to do just that. They're useful for several reasons. A majority can go off-road, tow an inordinate amount of weight, and make drivers feel safe with how high up they are. Trucks aren't the only vehicles, however, that can reach one million miles.

Some people love their pickup trucks so much that they've driven them for over a million miles, and we have the list to prove it. You would probably expect Japanese pickup trucks like the Toyota Tundra and Toyota Tacoma on this list, but there are some American brands as well. HotCars found ten pickups with the highest mileage ever recorded. We're going to show their specs and current market value per Classic.com.

How we made our model selection: HotCars scoured the web, including popular automotive databases such as Carsurvey.org to find ten pickup trucks that have recorded the highest mileage numbers so far. Each entry is in order from least to most miles. HotCars sourced specification data from manufacturers and current values from classic.com.

Clearly, if you put almost 1 million miles on your truck, you're spending the majority of your time behind the wheel. Kicking our list off is Victor Shephard's 2014 Toyota Tundra. It's powered by a 5.7-liter V8 that gets 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. What's most impressive about this Tundra is that, even though it has close to a million miles, the motor is still the same.

All Victor did was have some transmission work done on it as well as replace the water pumps and the seat motor for the adjustable seat. What's even more impressive is the fact that the interior is in pretty pristine condition for not only its age but also the wear it's gone through.

Hoovie's Garage goes to show you that, as long as you do the maintenance properly and on time, anything can last up to nearly one million miles. He bought this 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel pickup truck with 995,000 miles on it. According to the CarFax history report, it has had over 200 different maintenance items done on it over the lifespan of the vehicle.

The air conditioner was replaced twice, the transmission was (probably) replaced, and even the driveshaft was replaced just to name a few. The only thing that wasn't replaced was the 5.9-liter Cummins turbo diesel engine that outputs 235 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. The diesel can tow up to 13,500 pounds in total.

It seems to be that the majority of these vehicles that reach one million miles have nothing wrong with their motor but have to eventually have the transmissions changed. That was the case with Aaron Morvant's 2007 Toyota Tundra SR5 Crew Cab.

This Tundra was an oil field truck where the owner admitted he put somewhere between 100,000 to 125,000 miles on it annually. This owner had the base V8 engine with a 4.7-liter V8 outputting 271 horsepower and 313 pound-feet of torque.

Another hotshot oil delivery person, the previous owner of this vehicle (from Louisiana) put 125,000 miles annually on this Tundra. It's the same engine that came with the vehicle. The only major maintenance the previous owner did to it was change the alternator and water pump and over 100 oil changes.

This generation Tundra came with three powertrains, one V6 and two V8 engines. This one came equipped with the base 4.7-liter V8 that outputs 271 horsepower and 313 pound-feet of torque.

Like most of the stories of these trucks, this Frontier was a delivery-driving vehicle. Unlike most of these trucks, this is the most interesting story out of the bunch. Bryan Murphy put over one million miles on this manual transmission 2007 Nissan Frontier. Not only is it manual, but he put 800,000 miles on the original clutch. He also had tires and brakes lasting somewhere in the 150,000-mile range.

This truck is so celebrated that Nissan personally had him display his million-mile Frontier at the Chicago Auto Show. This Nissan Frontier has a 2.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine that outputs 152 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque.

One of the more rare birds on this list is a 1997 12-valve Cummins hauler. According to the video, the only thing that was really done on it (so far as was said in the video) was that it had a fresh coat of paint on it. The previous owner also stated that it's unfortunately lacking in power.

Therefore, the mechanic is going to check the timing chain on it to see if he can demand more power from it. This hauler has a 5.9-liter 12-valve Cummins diesel engine in it with 215 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. With the fifth-wheel "goose neck" trailer connector, this pickup can do some serious hauling at a maximum capacity of 13,600 pounds.

The beginning of the attached video makes a good point. Pickup trucks (and cars in general) are all about loyalty, and when it comes to pickup trucks, Ford, and more specifically, Chevrolet are great at garnering loyal customers. Frank Oresnik is one of those loyal customers who used his 1991 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 as a fish delivery truck.

He bought the vehicle with 40,000 miles on it and, since that point, has put 950,000-plus miles on it. He stated that he's had 400 oil changes and a handful of radiator replacements. This specific model is powered by a 5.7-liter naturally aspirated V8 that outputs 210 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque.

This original Ford F-350 Lariat 6.7-liter diesel V8 has over 999,999.9 miles on its original odometer. The previous owner of the truck (before it was bought by this garage) stated that he put an extra 300,000 miles on it that he clocked himself after the odometer reached its limit.

According to the video, the second owner of this vehicle replaced the transmission and transfer case, but the engine is original. It's clean on the inside and the outside and there was no major customization that was done to it.

2 John Freeland’s 2000 Ford F-350: 1.3 Million Miles

Vehicle Details

Engine

7.3-Liter V8 Diesel

Horsepower

250 HP

Torque

500 LB-FT

$28,516

(Sources: Ford, Classic.com)

One owner, John Freeland, has owned his 2000 Ford F-350 dually since day one and has four total miles on the odometer. It still has the same transmission in it too. The only thing he really replaced was the alternators and steering components, aside from the standard maintenance done on it.

Equally impressive is how detailed John's record keeping of the miles and maintenance is. This dually is powered by a 7.3-liter engine that makes 250 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of total torque.

1 Mike Neal’s 2008 Toyota Tacoma: 1.625 Million Miles

Vehicle Details

Engine

2.7-Liter Inline 4-Cylinder

Horsepower

159 HP

Torque

180 LB-FT

Current Value

$15,892

(Sources: Toyota, Classic.com)

Last on our list is Mike Neal's iconic 1.6-million mile 2008 Toyota Tacoma. One of the few owners to proudly display his mileage on the tailgate who would change it every 10,000 miles. Equally touching is the fact that, once Mike knew he was going to go well over one million miles, he wanted to get to the mileage that reflected his wedding anniversary on his long-running Tacoma.

The engine was replaced at 880,000 miles, according to Toyota Jeff, but everything else is basically the same as the original model.
