NAPLES, Maine — A Portland man was sentenced Monday nearly a year to the day after a shooting incident in Naples he later claimed responsibility for in court.

Alexzander Goodwin, 19, was sentenced to five years behind bars after he was convicted of elevated aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon stemming from a shooting during Fourth of July celebrations.

A news release issued last year by the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office stated the shooting took place at 7:05 p.m. along the Naples Causeway where crowds were gathering to watch the fireworks show, which was canceled because of the incident.

Police said at the time that a juvenile was injured during the shooting but suffered injuries not considered life-threatening and was treated at a local hospital.  A bullet also struck a vehicle, but no other injuries were reported at the time.

Goodwin reportedly evaded law enforcement and fled the scene by running into the woods, though the sheriff's office said at the time that they knew who the suspect was and were "hunting down leads, looking to find him."

The shooting rattled the community during the busy holiday.

Goodwin was arrested on July 6 and charged with elevated aggravated assault and reckless conduct. He pleaded guilty to the assault charge and to a separate drug trafficking charge.

He is currently being held at the Cumberland County Jail and will be under supervised probation upon his release.
