The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is proud to announce that it has been recognized with two prestigious awards focused on enhancing the well-being and independence of older adults and individuals with disabilities.

Empowering Chronic Disease Management

KDHE has been selected to receive two federal awards from the U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL). The first award, granted as part of the ACL Chronic Disease Self-Management and Education (CDSME) Program, is dedicated to empowering older adults in effectively managing their chronic conditions. With a generous grant of $150,000 per year for four years, KDHE will implement evidence-based programs that promote self-management and boost confidence in handling chronic illnesses.

Lainey Faulkner, the Bureau of Health Promotion Director at KDHE, expressed her excitement about the opportunity to make a significant impact in the lives of older adults and individuals with disabilities in Kansas. Faulkner stated, "These awards will enable us to roll out crucial programs that empower individuals to take control of their health effectively."

Preventing Falls among Vulnerable Populations

The second grant, part of the ACL Evidence-Based Falls Prevention Program, is geared towards reducing falls and the risk of falling among older adults and individuals with disabilities. KDHE will utilize the $150,000 annual grant over four years to enhance fall prevention initiatives, providing access to in-person and virtual evidence-based programs while improving fall prevention management strategies.

Daina Zolck, the Section Director for Injury and Violence Prevention Programs at KDHE, highlighted the importance of addressing falls as a primary concern for older adults. Zolck stated, "Our program aims to tackle this issue head-on, promoting independence and safety for our community members."

Commitment to Public Health

KDHE remains committed to prioritizing the health and well-being of all Kansans, leveraging these awards to their fullest potential. The department's goal is to ensure that older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout Kansas have access to essential resources and support.
