Jonathan Asante Otchere, a Political Analyst, has expressed some reservations about the appointment of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Energy Minister, as running mate for the New Patriotic Party ahead of the December 7 polls.

Mr. Asante Otchere shared his views on A1 Radio’s Day Break Upper East Show, emphasizing some key points that shed light on the advantages and challenges involved in the appointment of the former Education Minister to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer.

The Political Analyst noted that every flag bearer would naturally prioritize specific criteria when selecting a running mate. According to him, the decision should primarily hinge on the individual’s track record rather than mere potential.

Highlighting the significance of regional dynamics for the NPP ahead of the polls, Mr. Asante Otchere pointed out that the Ashanti Region serves as a stronghold for the party. Therefore, choosing a running mate from this region, in this case Dr. Opoku Prempeh, would bolster electoral numbers in the party’s favor.

However, he also raised questions about Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s broader appeal beyond party faithful. He pondered whether the appointee possesses the charisma and appeal needed to attract support from outside the party’s traditional base.

Moreover, Mr. Asante Otchere expressed doubts about Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s capability to effectively counter opposition attacks. He questioned whether the appointee has the necessary skills and resilience to navigate and respond to potential challenges.

Mr. Asante Otchere hoped that the appointee avoids making statements that could potentially alienate or deter potential supporters. He stressed the importance of maintaining a message that resonates positively with a broader audience.
