The Chief Judge (CJ) of Ekiti State, Justice John Adeyeye, has called for the decongestion of the correctional centre in the state for smooth administration of justice.

Justice Adeyeye, who condemned the situation where the correctional facility meant for 324 inmates now had 846 inmates, said, “We have 95 inmates for federal offenders and 751 inmates for state offenders,” describing the situation as unhealthy and dangerous.

Justice Adeyeye made the remarks during a courtesy visit by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Akinwale Adeniran, to his office.

The CJ said some cases that ought not to be filed through remand proceedings (Form K) were sometimes filed as such, hence that if application was granted, it led to congestion of the correctional facility.

He commended the police command for creating the judges protection unit which served as a bulwark against any serious threat to them.

Mr Adeniran on his part promised to support the judiciary to decongest the correctional centre and to work out modalities for smooth working relationship between the police and the judiciary.
