  • Brad Pitt regrets his actions and is working on self-improvement to earn his children's forgiveness.
  • Shiloh Jolie legally dropped Brad Pitt's last name, causing him to reflect on his parenting choices.
  • Brad Pitt remains hopeful for reconciliation and respects his children's pace in re-establishing their relationship.

News of Shiloh Jolie legally dropping Brad Pitt’s last name was apparently too much for the actor, but they were sadly not surprising. His other daughters, Zahara and Vivienne, had already chosen to socially only go by Angelina Jolie’s last name, so while Shiloh was the first to make the change legally, it was a feeling that all his daughters shared.

This has allegedly caused him to take a long look at himself and admit that his actions might have caused the situation, sources now claim, and the actor is apparently working on himself so he can earn back his kids' forgiveness.

Brad Pitt is, of course, devastated by his estranged relationship with his children, and the pattern of his daughters growing up and turning their back on him seems to have caused him regrets.

According to new reports, the actor has been reflecting on his parenting choices and regrets the way he sometimes pushed his children away, even if he thought he was doing the right thing.

The kids' dropping Brad's name is just the tip of the iceberg," an insider explained. "Brad spent a lot of time and money trying to do what he thought was the right thing for his kids, but now he's wondering if it was worth it."

Brad Pitt is reportedly "sorry for everything that went down" and "knows he wasn't a model husband or dad during the time they [he and Angelina Jolie] were together."

Despite how devastated he is by the way things turned out between him and his children, he still has hope for reconciliation, and their rejection pushes him to make changes and work to earn their forgiveness.

He's become a “better person” for it and is choosing to say sober, and he "knows he can't force the issue" and make them "want to see him," so he will respect their pace.

"It has to be on their terms, but he'll be there when they're ready."

Angelina Jolie's strong bond with her children is undeniable, but she seems to be especially close to her daughters. After all, Zahara, Shiloh, and Vivienne have all chosen to keep only the Jolie last name. Despite Shiloh being the only one who changed it legally, Vivienne is going by "Vivienne Jolie" professionally, as she dropped her father's last name in The Outsiders playbill.

Apparently, Shiloh's decision to change her last name was completely personal, and she waited until she was 18 so that her mother didn't have to help her.

"Shiloh hired her own lawyer and paid for it herself, so Angie doesn't know and can't speak for it," a source said about the situation.

Brad Pitt's reaction came almost immediately, with reports claiming that Shiloh's decision was heartbreaking for him.

"He's aware and upset that Shiloh dropped his last name. He’s never felt more joy than when she was born. He always wanted a daughter," a source told PEOPLE. "The reminders that he’s lost his children, is of course not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them. It’s very sad."

"He’s still happy with Ines [de Ramon, his girlfriend]," the source added, but being estranged from his children still "pains" him.
