Vidic signed for United in the 2005 January transfer window and will go down as one of the greatest ever mid-season signings as he went on to win a staggering 15 trophies with the club. The Serbian defender was a mainstay at the back for United where he made 300 appearances across eight seasons.

Rio Ferdinand 

Leeds United – Manchester United

£33.3 million, 2002

When Ferdinand signed for United, he was the most expensive British player in history, and he went on to be a formidable part of the club’s success over the next 12 years. 

The English defender made an astounding 455 appearances for United, where he captained the club on numerous occasions.
