Expressing deep concern over the recent surge in violent incidents, NANS highlighted the devastating impact of these senseless acts on young Nigerians, causing widespread fear and disrupting the peaceful coexistence vital for Nigeria’s socio-economic progress.

The statement issued by Abdul-Yekinn Odunayo, the National Clerk of the Senate, underscored the alarming situation in several parts of Ogun State, including Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Abeokuta, Ilaro, Ota, and Ifo, which have become battlegrounds for rival cult factions.

NANS also sounded an urgent warning about anticipated clashes between rival groups on July 7, traditionally marked by violent confrontations among cult factions seeking dominance.

“Cultism represents a grave societal aberration, claiming numerous lives among students and residents alike,” the statement read. “Our campuses have sadly become arenas of conflict, where rival groups vie for supremacy at the expense of innocent lives.”

The recent tragic killing of Ahmed Ayinla Fabiyi, a final-year student of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), was highlighted as a poignant example of this brutality. Fabiyi, allegedly targeted by rival cultists on the day he was to sit his final exam and celebrate his birthday, was mercilessly attacked on campus premises, according to eyewitnesses.

“NANS vehemently condemns this barbaric act,” the statement continued. “Those responsible must be swiftly apprehended by our security agencies and brought to justice.”

The organization also appealed to the Ogun State government to ensure that the perpetrators of such heinous crimes, including Fabiyi’s killers, face the full force of the law.

“We reiterate our stance that involvement in cultism is not only morally reprehensible but also a pathway to perpetrating grave crimes,” the statement concluded. “Students must resist all pressures to join these groups, as the consequences are invariably tragic and irreversible.”
