The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday admitted that it has a “temporary” setback in the contest for Edo governorship election.

Adamawa State governor, Ahmadu Finitri, who is also the Chairman of the party’s campaign councils for the Edo governorship election, said this at the inaugural meeting of the council in Abuja.

He, however, expressed hopes that the party would overcome the setback.

He disclosed that the party is approaching the Appeal Court to set aside the judgement of the Federal High Court.

“And yes, there is a little setback, temporarily. God will see us through it. Referring to the three days, I mean, three days ago’s court judgment, anybody who peruse and look through the entire process, you know that is a child’s play,” Fintiri said.

“This is what will not stand in the court of law, particularly that we will be approaching the court of appeal.”

Fintiri, who urged party leaders to intensify efforts in the campaign, said the setback should not discourage them from the goal of winning the election.

“We will put more commitment, more work than we have not intended to do earlier so that we will put our detractors into shame. And this is what we know best. We will support our candidate with everything at our disposal. We will not shy away from putting in our best. I will be guided by the experiences of the senior stakeholders here with us,” Fintiri said.

In his remark at the meeting, the governorship candidate of the PDP, Asue Ighodalo, said although there are challenges ahead, the party would emerge victorious in the election.

“I know it’s not going to be easy, it’s going to be very difficult. We’ve already seen the signs that this is going to be a difficult election, not only issues but on distractions,” Ighodalo said.

“But sometimes distractions are more difficult to deal with than issues. But I know that we have leaders here who are more than capable to set the ball rolling and to lift us higher than some others.”

Meanwhile, PDP’s national legal advise, Kamarudeen Ajibade, has denied reports that the PDP candidate has been disqualified.

“I know very much that everyone was taken aback the day before yesterday when the news broke that our primary election had been nullified and that our candidate had been disqualified. This even took me to Channels yesterday morning,” Ajibade said.

“Ordinarily it is not my duty to be the spokesperson to the party, but in this instance, I had to come out to make sure I put the record straight. And the CTC that came out, as I promised has vindicated us.”
