Opinion: Predicting every Tottenham Hotspur score for the rest of the season

spurs-web.com 2024/5/17

Following a pair of defeats to end April, Spurs now flip the calendar to the season’s final month.

Currently sitting fifth in the table, can Spurs make up a seven-point gap on fourth-place Aston Villa for the final Champions League spot? Or is Tottenham destined for a Europa League place?

With only five fixtures remaining, here are our match predictions for each one as Spurs look to end the campaign on a high note.

Thursday, May 2: at Chelsea

Spurs kick off the season’s final month with a London derby battle, facing rival Chelsea away at Stamford Bridge.

Will Tottenham get revenge for a 4-1 thrashing at the hands of the Blues in November? Or will Mauricio Pochettino’s current side complete the season sweep of his former?

It’s a difficult fixture to predict, seeing as both teams are up and down at the moment.

MORE SPURS STORIES

While Spurs are currently seven points back of a Champions League place, Chelsea finds themselves five points adrift of a potential Conference League spot.

In other words, both sides will be looking to pick up the full three points as they attempt to chase European qualification.

Seeing as it is a big rivalry match and both teams aren’t impressive as of late, the points will be split as the inconsistency continues for both London clubs.

Prediction: Spurs 2–2 Chelsea

Sunday, May 5: vs. Liverpool

Not that long ago, Liverpool was in contention for a potential quadruple as Jürgen Klopp looked to add to the trophy cabinet on his way out of Anfield.

The Reds claimed the Carabao Cup title at the end of February, which was followed by advancing to the FA Cup and Europa League quarterfinals and a win and draw in the league.

Since a 6-2 UEL second-leg victory over Sparta Prague however, Liverpool have been upset in the FA Cup (Manchester United), eliminated in Europe (Atalanta), and dropped points against Man United, Crystal Palace, Everton, and West Ham.

Needless to say, Klopp’s potential for a legendary final campaign has withered away, including the club’s chances at a Premier League crown.

Liverpool currently finds themselves third in the standings, five points back of top-of-the-table Arsenal. Perennial title-winner Manchester City also sits ahead of the Reds, with a four-point cushion and a game in hand.

Although Liverpool’s struggles have been highlighted, Spurs haven’t been much better.

A result at Anfield is a difficult ask of a Tottenham side that can’t keep goals out of the net.

Prediction: Liverpool 3–2 Spurs

Saturday, May 11: vs. Burnley

In one of the two “easier” fixtures remaining on the schedule, Spurs will be favoured to take the full three points against Burnley.

Currently 19th in the table, Burnley sits just two points back from 17th and survival in the Premier League.

A Tottenham win in this matchup could potentially send the Clarets back to the Championship, something that appears likely as Burnley must also face Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

Spurs recorded a 5-2 victory in the reverse fixture earlier this season and should complete the double over a side that has conceded 70 goals (third-most in the PL) and recorded only five wins.

Prediction: Spurs 3–1 Burnley

Tuesday, May 14: vs. Manchester City

While Spurs are chasing Aston Villa for the last UCL place, Manchester City is just one point back of Arsenal for a league title and has a match in hand.

City could very well be on its way to claiming a sixth Premier League title in seven seasons, and three points against Spurs could be the difference in another trophy in the cabinet or a second-place finish.

The Citizens do have a history of failing to notch wins at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with an FA Cup win in January being their first victory in six attempts at the ground.

One of the things that Spurs have done at home against Pep Guardiola’s side is not concede goals. The 1-0 win for City in this season’s FA Cup fourth-round tie was the first time they scored a goal since Tottenham opened the new stadium.

Spurs however have registered just six clean sheets in league play this season, and a Man City side looking for another title and on a five-match winning run in the league will be too much for Tottenham to manage.

Prediction: Manchester City 3–1 Spurs

Sheffield United

Sunday, May 19: at Sheffield United

The final match of the campaign sees Spurs travel to Bramall Lane to face already-relegated Sheffield United.

With the Blades already preparing for the drop to the second tier and Tottenham potentially already set in their league position, will either club even play a full-strength team in the season finale?

Either way, Spurs should be heavy favourites against a side that has tallied just 16 points and conceded a league-high 97 (!?) goals during the season.

Three points and a return to European football would be a positive way to end the debut campaign of manager Ange Postecoglou while Spurs gear up for 2024-25.

Prediction: Spurs 2–1 Sheffield United

Final analysis

Starting the final month of the 2023-24 season in fifth place, I expect Spurs to end the season in the same spot.

With five matches in May, I predict Tottenham to secure seven of a possible 15 points, recording two wins, two defeats, and a draw.

This would mean Spurs end the campaign with 67 points and locked in fifth position in the table.

While it means the club would fall short of a Champions League berth, a Europa League place would be a positive step forward following no European football in 2023-24.

What place will Spurs finish in 2024? Is Europa League football a success or a disappointment?
