Hundreds of new homes could soon be coming to Greater Manchester after multiple planning applications for housing developments were submitted to councils this week.

salford-university>Salford University has plans to get rid of some of their older accommodation in order to make way for 1,500 student rooms within a 28-storey tower block. This would see the demise of the John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts tower blocks near the precinct.

Wigan and Leigh College’s old gym at the Leigh site could soon make way for 38 new homes.

Then plans for hundreds of new homes in Mossley, near Ashton, have taken yet another step towards reality.

Here is a breakdown of each borough’s submitted planning applications this week

Bolton

No new significant planning applications have been submitted to Bolton Council this week.

Bury

Building supplies giant Screwfix plan new Greater Manchester branch

A building supplies firm plans to open a new branch in Prestwich.

Planning documents filed in the past week state Screwfix Direct Ltd is seeking to occupy two units at Sedgley Park trading estate on George Street, just off Bury New Road. The application, submitted to Bury Council, said when open the outlet will employ 12 members of staff, four of them full time.

Two units at the trading estate will be knocked through if the plans go ahead.

New public car park included in plans for Ramsbottom town centre housing estate

A decision on revised plans to build 57 homes near the centre of Ramsbottom is expected next week.

The plans, which include creating a 47-space public car park for visitors to the town, have been submitted by Eccleston Homes who wish to build the new estate at the former Holcombe Mill, also known as the Mondi paper mill site, on Bridge Street.

The scheme has been recommended for approval by Bury council officers ahead of a planning committee meeting on Tuesday, July 9.

Luxury homes where residents park cars UNDERNEATH their living room planned

Luxury town-houses where residents park cars underneath their living rooms are planned for the former site of a builders merchants.

Plans have been submitted to Bury Council to demolish Knowsley Mill, which later became Travis Perkins and build a terrace of 10 four-bedroom houses. The mill is on Lawrence Street, next to the A56, south of Bury town centre.

New 28-storey tower blocks could create 1,500 student rooms in Salford

Plans have been shared to build two 28-storey tower blocks for student accommodation in Salford.

This would see the demolition of the existing John Lester and Eddie Colman Courts which were built in the 1960s, located near Salford Precinct. The existing towers, owned by Campus Living Villages, house more than 700 students, but the facilities are 'dated' and 'unable to provide the quality of accommodation expected by students' according to a planning statement.

The proposed new block could provide a total of 1,585 bedrooms across two blocks, with communal areas, and bike and refuse stores on the ground floor.

Stockport

Almost 200 'executive homes' take a step closer to becoming reality

Up to 175 new ‘executive’ homes could soon be built on farmland in Mossley after initial plans were given the green light by Tameside Council.

The high-end homes, which the applicant says would help tackle the shortage of ‘executive’ properties in the area off Huddersfield Road. The sloping site sits between Hey Farm Estate and Mossley Hollins High School.

The layout of the development, which was first proposed in 2019, could still be subject to change when permission for full planning permission is submitted.

Semi-detached house could become 10-bed HMO in GM suburb

Plans to convert a two bed semi-detached home in Stretford into a 10-bed house of multiple occupation HMO have been submitted.

Applicant Aamer Shah, based in Blackburn, wants to change the use of the house on Barton Road into shared accommodation. If approved, the house will be divided and extended to create extra bedrooms with shared communal living space, bathrooms and kitchen and dining facilities.

Private parking along with secure bicycle racks will be provided to the outside areas as well as a bin store.

Controversial plans for Jewish free movement area in leafy Greater Manchester suburb back on the table

Plans to erect a series of 18ft poles to create an area in Hale and Hale Barns where orthodox Jews can move freely on the sabbath - known as a eruv - are back on the table after first being proposed a decade ago.

An eruv is an area exempt from Jewish law which does not allow the carrying or pushing items outside private areas without violating Shabbat restrictions. The planning application is for 26 galvanised steel posts on the streets around Hale and Hale Barns, each connected by nylon wire.

Former college gymnasium set to make way for 38 new homes

Plans to bulldoze the former Wigan and Leigh College gymnasium to create 38 new homes look set for approval when they go before the borough’s planning committee on Tuesday (July 9).

Planning officers have recommended that the proposal to build 20 three-storey houses and a three-storey apartment block on brownfield land at Railway Road, Leigh should go ahead. The site fronts onto three streets - Ullswater Street, Boughey Street and Thirlmere Street, and has been partly cleared apart from the derelict former college gymnasium.

Hundreds turn out to protest against pub conversion into house of multiple occupation

Hundreds of angry residents have turned out to protest against the conversion of a pub near Wigan town centre into a house of multiple occupation (HMO).

They gathered outside the Crispin Arms on Birkett Bank in the Scholes area of the town to object to the plans to transform it into a 15-bedroom residence. Two Independent councillors, Maureen O’Bern and Tony Whyte, were also there as nearly 300 people from neighbouring streets met to register their fury at the ‘proliferation’ of HMOs in the town.

Passing motorists blew their horns in approval as the throng of protesters grew in number.
