‘More graceful than me’ – Nick Kyrgios gives Carlos Alcaraz 10/10 for dive on Centre Court as David Beckham watches on

Carlos Alcaraz's wild dive at Wimbledon to try save a point earned him a 10/10 from Nick Kyrgios on commentary.

Alcaraz tried to go for the spectacular during his first-round clash against Mark Lajal on Centre Court at Wimbledon.

With both up close and personal at the net, Lajal lashed back a shot at Alcaraz, who tried his best to react by diving to his left and ended up launching his racket.

While the Spaniard missed, he was applauded for his efforts by the crowd, which included England and Manchester United legend David Beckham.

Speaking on BBC commentary, former England No. 1 Tim Henman said: "What do we give him for this dive, Nick?"

Kyrgios replied: "Pretty graceful. Compared to mine that's a 10/10!"

The Australian, who is not taking part in this year's Wimbledon due to injury, was referring to his own dive - though, as he admitted, there was somewhat less finesse with his effort.

It came at the Queen's Club Championship in 2019 when he faced Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round.

As no stranger to controversy and the odd moment of madness, Kyrgios inexplicably dived for one shot before tumbling into the net.

While Lajal won that point, Alcaraz went on to take the next four to win the first set 7-6 (7-3) before sealing the second and third sets 7-5 6-2.

But the 2023 Wimbledon winner has not had everything his own way and his Estonian opponent has given a good account of himself.

Lajal was close to taking the second set in another game that went the distance, though the world No. 262 succumbed to a 7-5 loss to go two sets behind before Alcaraz swept through the third 6-2 to win the match in straight sets.

Kyrgios added: "It's been a pretty entertaining match, I'm enjoying what I'm seeing here.

"I think Carlos Alcaraz will be relatively happy with his performance so far and he'd love to get a straight-sets victory here.

"Carlos Alcaraz has got this all-court game which includes coming to the net. It's impressive, that's for sure.

"I think sometimes Carlos Alcaraz suffers from having too many options on a tennis court."

As well as Beckham, several celebrities have been out in force at Wimbledon including broadcaster and biologist David Attenborough, Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins and Princess Olympia.

Alcaraz, who won the French Open, hit straight back and then eased through the gears. He is now aiming to Novak Djokovic, whom he beat last year, as well as Roger Federer by retaining the title.

As he was walked out to start the match, it was the first time since 2003 that Centre Court opened with a men's champion not named Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray.

The defending champion was just pleased to get off to a winning start. "He played a really good match," he said. "Obviously he surprised me a little bit because I hadn't seen him too much.

"He's young, he's my age and I'm sure I'm going to see him really soon on the tour and play him more often.

"But I'm really happy to get through and get my first win on Centre Court this year."
