JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Two men were shot in two separate Fourth of July Jacksonville shootings Thursday night, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

The shootings took place about two-and-a-half hours apart from each other, according to JSO.

Here’s what police say happened in each.

At approximately 8:35 p.m., JSO’s Sergeant Richardson says officers responded to the 1200 block of Spearing Street in reference to a drive-by shooting. 

When officers arrived, a man was found shot once in his leg, as he was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Richardson.

“The initial investigation revealed the victim and two other individuals were sitting in a car when an unknown individual fired multiple shots in their direction from a white sedan,” Richardson said. 

Police say the white sedan then fled the area in an “unknown direction of travel.”

“Detectives responded to the scene, canvassed the area for video surveillance, and spoke with witnesses,” Richardson said. It’s still early in the investigation and we have limited information at this time.”

Around 11 p.m., Richardson says officers responded to Dupont Avenue and St. Augustine Road in reference to a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found a man in his 60s suffering from a gunshot wound to his torso, Richardson says; he was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“Our initial investigation determined the victim was shot during a robbery of a fireworks tent,” Richardson said. “The victim is an employee of the business who intervened during the robbery.”

The man was shot when he confronted the suspect, police say, as the suspect “completed the robbery and fled the scene with the register.”

Richardson tells First Coast News that another employee was present during the robbery, but he was not injured.

JSO says it does not currently have a description of the suspect and that an investigation is ongoing.
