US Airline Ticket Sales Hit $9 Billion in May Despite Decrease in Average Price

U.S. travel agencies have reported a significant milestone in May 2024, with air ticket sales reaching a whopping $9 billion, as per the latest data from Airlines Reporting Corp. (ARC). Despite a slight 1 percent decrease from the previous month, passenger trips saw a 1 percent increase, totaling 25.7 million. Domestic Trips Surge: The data indicates a notable 10 percent year-over-year surge in U.S. domestic trips, reaching 16.2 million, along with a 2 percent increase in international trips, totaling 9.5 million. The average ticket price for May stood at $543, reflecting a 1 percent decrease from April and a 3 percent decrease from the same period in 2023. In a statement, Steve Solomon, the chief commercial officer at ARC, highlighted the significance of the sales surpassing $9 billion for three consecutive months, signaling the robust strength of air travel in 2024. Despite economic pressures, airfare remains relatively stable compared to the previous year, offering travelers a consistent experience. Surge in Ancillary Sales: ARC's analysis also revealed a notable 17 percent increase in ancillary sales, amounting to $31 million year over year, with a significant 59 percent increase in ancillary transactions totaling 564,619 over the same period. Ancillary sales encompass fees for various products and services, such as upgraded seats, checked bags, unaccompanied minor services, and pet-in-cabin options, among others.
