Tap Water Reaching Noida Residents Contains High Levels Of Unwanted Solids: Report

jagran.com 2024/10/6

Tap water reaching the residents of Noida is not Ganga water but has high concentration of unwanted solids, total dissolved solid (TDS), the residents have complained. The TDS level in the tap water is supposed to be between 1500 parts per million (ppm) and 2000 ppm against the Bureau of Indian Standard ceiling of 500 mg/I (1ppm is 0.99 mg/I). Noida Authority states that it supplies 206 MLD of the otherwise sweet Ganga water, sourced from Ghaziabad's Pratap Vihar and Siddharth Vihar water treatment plants to 75 per cent of the sectors in the city, but what flows from the taps isn't 100 per cent Ganga water, a TOI report said.

General manager of Noida's water department, RP Singh said that for the 407 MLD water demand, Noida supplies 480 MLD water. Out of this, 206 MLD, about 42 per cent is Ganga water which is mixed with groundwater sourced from Ranney wells and tubewells in a 60:40 ratio and supplied across the city.

Noida's rapidly depleting groundwater is known to have high alkalinity, dissolved solids, hardness and chloride content. Moderate to high TDS in water can not only change the taste of water but also cause health hazards.

Many residents across the city are complaining regarding the taste of the water. Mohit Mongia, a resident of Lotus Panache said that sector 110 was among the sectors that were supposed to receive Ganga water, but when it was supplied, it was unfit for drinking. He added that several residents of the society he resides in including his wife and kids fell ill after consuming the poor quality of water.

RWA general secretary of sector 51, Sanjeev Kumar said that recently the Ganga water pipeline in the sector was damaged. When the Ganga water supply was halted because of pipeline repair work, the TDS level of the taped water was revealed to be around 2,000 ppm compared to 1,000 ppm, previously.

The situation is worsening in Greater Noida West, as many residents do not have access to Ganga water. However, as per officials, 14 sectors of Greater Noida are expected to get Ganga water supply by early next year, and work for the same is ongoing, the TOI report added.
