The Transition Committee established by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to oversee the Labour Party’s national and state congresses has condemned the planned convention by the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, calling it a violation of a court order…….. CONTINUE READING

In a statement issued on Monday, Tony Akeni, Chairman of the Sub-committee on Media & Publicity, urged party members not to participate in Abure’s congress.

The NLC has been advocating for Abure’s removal, labeling any convention that reinstates him as illegal. This situation led the NLC Political Commission to invalidate the new leadership and form a Transition Committee tasked with organizing a fresh convention within 90 days.

Comrade Abdulwaheed Omar, Chairman of the Transition Committee, stated that plans for the national convention would be unveiled following a stakeholders’ meeting on May 8.

Akeni responded to Abure’s faction’s call for a new congress, asserting it was unlawful and against the constitutional regulations governing political parties in Nigeria.

He criticized Abure and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their actions in various states, calling them fraudulent and defiant of an irrevocable court judgment and the Nigeria Electoral Act.

Akeni warned that anyone purchasing or planning to purchase congress forms from Abure does so at their own risk.

He also alleged that some political parties were conspiring to undermine the Labour Party, stating that the party would take action against anyone participating in Abure’s congress.

“The coalition between Abure’s faction and infiltrators from larger parties aims to weaken the Labour Party’s position as a formidable opposition, jeopardizing the hopes of the Nigerian masses,” Akeni asserted.

He urged Abure, his associates, and potential congress aspirants to cease their activities and wait for the official timetable for state congresses and the National Convention, which the Transition Committee will announce soon. Akeni concluded with a stern warning about the consequences for those involved in these unauthorized actions.
