UK travel chaos as Border Force outage leaves 'hundreds' queueing at airports

Daily Star 1 day ago

A Border Force outage is affecting UK airports prompting chaos for travellers up and down the country. Edinburgh Airport posted the warning this afternoon (April 25)

UK airports are in disarray due to a Border Force outage causing significant delays at Passport Control.

The issue is affecting travellers across the country. Edinburgh Airport issued a warning on the afternoon of April 25, with no indication of when the problem will be fixed.

Reports say travellers have been stuck in huge queues for at least 45 minutes after a Border Force outage hit UK airports, reports the Mirror.

A statement from the management at the Scottish airport read: "Border Force is currently experiencing a nationwide technical outage affecting airports across the UK.

"This is resulting in longer wait times for arriving passengers."

One passenger at the Scottish airport said Passport Control was "completely jammed up", and they had received "zero communication" about the ongoing delays.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport said longer wait times for arriving passengers could be expected, with teams in the arrivals hall providing support to those affected.

Live airport departures show many of the scheduled flights on Thursday still seem set to fly, reports the Express. Some flights have been cancelled, but there's nothing so far to suggest this is related to long queues within the terminals.

It is believed that the outage is "nationwide" and so could affect passengers at airports up and down the UK – however, so far, the extent is not yet known.

Over on X, formerly known as Twitter, Andrew Heald said: "Chaos at Edinburgh Airport. Huge queues out on to the tarmac for in bound passenger - Passport Control completely jammed up.

"Zero communication from anyone at the airport. I was waiting for 70 minutes and there were no announcements over the PA system or apologies."

Another passenger said: "Shambles at arrivals. Endless queues." while a third noted there were "Hundreds of people queuing outside."

Your rights for cancelled flights

If your flight is cancelled by the airline, you're entitled to receive a full refund, or an alternative flight to your destination.

According to the Citizens Advice Bureau, a full refund also includes "other flights from the airline that you won’t use in the same booking such as onward or return flights".

If you're part-way through a journey, you also have a right to fly back to your original departure airport.

It's worth noting if you were given less than two weeks' notice for the cancellation, and you're offered a replacement flight that delays you by at least two hours, you may also be entitled to compensation.
