Bengaluru court sentences former Customs SP to 4 years in jail, imposes hefty fine in disproportionate assets case

The Principal City Civil and Sessions Judge and Special Judge for CBI Cases, Bengaluru, sentenced V Vishweshwara Bhat, former Superintendent of Customs, Air Cargo Complex, Air Customs Commissionerate, Bengaluru, to four years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 26,25,000 for the possession of disproportionate assets.

A case was registered by the CBI on March 31, 2016, against Bhat. It was alleged that Bhat, while working as the Superintendent of Customs, had amassed assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

During the check period, from January 2010 to March 2016, Bhat allegedly had in his possession disproportionate assets to the extent of Rs 39,65,329 (113.46 per cent disproportionate to his known sources of income).

After completion of investigation, chargesheet was filed on September 27, 2017 against Bhat.

The investigation revealed that while working as a public servant in the capacity of Superintendent at various places, he had amassed assets to the tune of Rs 28,38,233 disproportionate to his known sources of income. The amount was 61.94 per cent disproportionate to his known sources of income.

After trial, the court held Bhat guilty and sentenced him accordingly.
