In a candid critique of the Super Eagles, exinternational, Wasiu Ipaye, has described the team as being filled with “average players with bloated egos.”

Ipaye, who was part of the Super Eagles squad that reached the final of the 1990 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), believes the current players cannot measure up to their predecessors from the 1990s and early 2000s in terms of talent and mentality, which is reflected in the team’s recent performances.

Ipaye expressed concern that despite their lacklustre performances, the players still have in – flated opinions of them – selves, displaying egos that disrupt the progress of the national team.

He cited the outburst of striker Victor Osimhen against the erstwhile handler of the team, Finidi George, as a clear example of the ego crisis within the squad.

Ipaye also criticised the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for fail – ing to handle the matter properly, suggesting that such incidents under – mine the team’s cohesion and development.

“The truth is that most of the players in the Super Eagles are average, and many of them have big egos. I am still unhap – py about the way the NFF has handled Osimhen’s issue; they are setting a bad example if they fail to sanction him.

He is a player who shouldn’t be above the law. I heard that his actions are now affecting his contract, and if care is not taken, he could suffer from it.

It’s good that the NFF is going for a foreign coach because these players are not ready to respect any local manager.
