Garden expert shares 'important' rule to follow when deadheading roses for 'large flowers'

Roses need to be deadheaded once their flowers fade to stop them from producing seeds. Deadheading will encourage the plant to produce more flowers and direct energy into the leaves and stems.

During the summer months, the plants can quickly bloom and fade which can make your garden look tatty and unsightly.

One of the most important tasks gardeners need to do in summer to keep their roses looking their best is deadheading.

This form of pruning simply removes the spent flowers from ornamental plants, directing energy away from the plant's seed development.

Deadheading roses will encourage additional flowers to bloom on hybrid tea and other repeat-flowering roses.

With this in mind, professional horticulturalist Amanda Plante has shared an "important" rule to follow when it comes to deadheading roses.

The key to pruning hybrid tea roses is to remove the entire flowering head above the first leaf with five leaflets.

In a video for HGTV, the expert explained: "When you're pruning one of these, you want to go down past any three-leaflet leaves, all the way down to one who has five-leaflets.

"Then, you want to look for a bud that's pointing out away from the plant. That way, the new stem is going to grow outwards rather than in towards the plant where it's going to be crossing.

"This is important if you want those long stems with the large, beautiful flowers. Pruning higher up above one [a leaf] that has three leaflets...it will still flower again it just might be smaller."

Once deadheaded, hybrid tea roses do not need to be pruned properly until late winter.

Usually, the plants will only need pruning once they start to re-grow which is around mid-February or March.
