Fuming NC500 locals have blasted the motorist after they were pictured driving on the wrong side of the road along the popular route.

The snaps show a silver campervan driving on the right-hand side of the road in Durness, rather than the left-hand side.

One person commented: "999 report the vehicle. They are driving into oncoming traffic."

Another added: "If they can't drive safely in our country then they shouldn't be driving here.

"There have been so many fatal accidents on our roads, I have no doubt some of them caused by driving on the wrong side of the road."

While a third added: "This happened to us twice in one day! Luckily no human injury, just their wing mirror but it’s only a matter of time till there is a fatality."

However, a number of Facebook users defended the tourist, saying it's an easy mistake to make.

One person commented: "It’s a mistake. If you have ever driven abroad - it’s very easy to momentarily forget.

"Why report to the police - what on earth will they do? The friendly thing to do would be to flag down and advise in a friendly way. They are foreigners visiting our country."

A second wrote: "Very easy mistake, being American and travelling between the UK and the US many times a year would not be the first time I have driven out of Miami car hire places on the wrong side of the road.

"They will quickly realise when they see a car coming at them head on."

And another added: "Easy to do. As mentioned in a previous post, a local in the North West bought signs himself and installed them on road signs all over this area."

It comes after an NC500 camper was spotted pitching up a tent in a BUS STOP along the popular tourist route.

A photo of the bizarre incident was uploaded to Facebook and has since divided opinions between locals.

Independent councillor Duncan Macpherson snapped the tourist who set up camp in a bus stop 10 miles south of Inverness.

The small green tent can be seen inside the shelter, with a bike leaning up against it.

And furious locals blasted "car camping" NC500 tourists after they took over a bus shelter and turned it into a makeshift kitchen.

The holidaymakers were snapped with dishes, water bottles and cooking equipment strewn across the inside of the shelter.
