ISTANBUL, Turkey: A devastating explosion caused by a propane tank at a restaurant in Izmir, western Turkey, claimed the lives of five people and injured 63 others, according to local authorities.

Security footage captured the moment of the explosion, which destroyed the restaurant and caused minor damage to nearby buildings, leaving the street in disarray.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated on social media that rescue teams were swiftly deployed to the scene to assist with the aftermath.

Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban visited the injured in the hospital, reporting that 40 of the 63 injured individuals had already been discharged.

Authorities have detained one suspect believed to be connected to the incident. The man had reportedly replaced the propane tank with a new one just a day before the explosion.
