Oyo: Makinde presents staff of office to new monarch

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, On Monday, presented the staff of office to the newly crowned Elempe of Tapa, Oba Titiloye Oyekanmi, during a ceremony held at Elempale Community High School in the town.

Representing the governor, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal emphasized the pivotal role of the Elempe in fostering unity, peace, and progress within the community. He praised the meticulous selection process that culminated in Oba Oyekanmi ascending to the throne, lauding it as a testament to the community’s commitment to tradition, transparency, and the rule of law.

Governor Makinde, addressing the new monarch directly, urged Oba Oyekanmi to collaborate closely with the state government to address critical local issues such as security and economic development. “I charge you, Oba Oyekanmi, to embrace the responsibilities that accompany this esteemed position,” Makinde emphasized. “Work with us to tackle pressing community needs including education, healthcare, security, and economic advancement.”

Highlighting ongoing challenges like kidnapping, banditry, and land disputes in the area, Makinde called for the Elempe’s partnership in combating these issues. He imparted advice to the new ruler, stating, “Leadership is a sacred trust demanding wisdom, compassion, and integrity. Your tenure should embody grace, humility, and a steadfast commitment to the welfare of all.”

Governor Makinde expressed gratitude to the community for their support throughout the selection process, affirming the significance of upholding traditional values and the heritage of the Elempe lineage. “Today marks a significant milestone for Tapa and for all who cherish our enduring customs and traditions,” he concluded.

In response, Oba Oyekanmi expressed gratitude to God and Governor Makinde for the occasion. “Today’s event is unprecedented in our community,” he remarked, acknowledging the governor’s dedication to preserving local customs and values. He pledged to lead Tapa with a focus on development, peace, and prosperity, pledging, “Under my stewardship, Tapa Land will experience remarkable growth and harmony, guided by divine principles.”

Earlier, State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo, described the event as a historic moment for Tapa, marking a transition to a new era under the leadership of their esteemed monarch.
