The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has announced that January 2025 was the hottest January ever recorded, with global temperatures reaching 1.75°C above pre-industrial levels and 0.79°C above the 1991-2020 average, despite La Niña conditions that were expected to moderate the heat.

According to the data, January was the 18th month in the past 19 to exceed 1.5°C. This is a level the international community vowed to avoid under the 2015 Paris Agreement.

The past decade has been the hottest on record, with 2024's seasonal temperatures all breaking records. Human activities, like burning fossil fuels and deforestation, are primarily responsible for increasing temperatures, which have led to record-high levels of greenhouse gases.
