A Connecticut teen has been sentenced to 34 years in prison in connection with a fatal shooting in 2021.

Syshone Joyner, 19, of Bridgeport, was sentenced by Judge Peter McShane to 45 years in prison, execution suspended after 34 years served, followed by five years of probation, for the 2021 fatal shooting of 21-year-old Jamel Hayden, according to a statement from the Connecticut Division of Criminal Justice on Monday.

On April 12, a Bridgeport Superior Court jury found Joyner guilty of first-degree manslaughter with a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit.

On Aug. 28, 2021, officers were called to the 100 block of Lincoln Avenue at 12:30 p.m. on a report of a motor vehicle accident with shots fired, according to the Bridgeport Police Department.

Upon arriving to the scene, police said they found Hayden, who was involved in the car crash, suffering from a gunshot wound.

He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police

Court records show that Joyner and co-defendant Edwin Abrams reportedly conspired to rob Hayden of $250 worth of marijuana. When Hayden arrived at the designated meeting spot, Joyner reportedly pulled out a gun and shot him.

“After being shot, the victim then accelerated his vehicle and it crashed into three parked cars,” the DCJ said in a statement. “Joyner and Abrams then fled. Joyner later bragged about the shooting saying, ‘I popped him.'”

During the four-day jury trial, the prosecution presented surveillance footage, nearly 70 exhibits and testimony from more than a dozen witnesses, according to the DCJ.

Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Tiffany Lockshier, who prosecuted the case, urged the court to impose the maximum sentence.

“A clear message needs to be sent that this gun violence will not be tolerated,” she said.
